Understanding Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

As an international student, you are required to have OSHC for the length of your student visa.

This is a health insurance that is designed for international students, which will support you with selected medical and health needs while studying in Australia.

There is a range of different plans that cover the minimum requirements through the six insurers providing OSHC in Australia.

So, what does OSHC actually cover?

  • Visits to a doctor (GP)

  • Some hospital treatments

  • Emergency ambulance services

  • Some prescription medicines

However, keep in mind, OSHC doesn’t usually cover dental, optical, or physiotherapy.

To access these services, you will need to have an extras cover plan, which you can add on to your standard OSHC plan.

Ensure you have a chat with your insurer, so you understand what is and isn’t covered under your insurance plan.

Where can you go for medical help

Doctor: (GP): To visit a doctor, also known as a GP which stands for a General Practioner, you can check the Healthengine or HotDoc websites to find a clinic near you. This is the first stop for non-emergency issues like minor injuries, colds, vaccinations or getting a prescription for medication.

To book an appointment, you can call the clinic or book online. Many clinics are also open after hours and on weekends.

Some clinics also offer Telehealth, which are appointments that can be made over the phone or on video call with a doctor or health professional.

There are also on-campus medical clinics available at Flinders University, the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia

Hospitals: For emergencies, you can go to a hospital’s Emergency Department or call 000 for an ambulance. Your OSHC plan covers emergency ambulance costs.
