International education is now South Australia’s top export – and has become the state’s first export sector to ever exceed the $3 billion mark.
Figures reveal that international education was worth $3.152 billion to the state’s economy in 2023.
The export figures come on the back of a record 54,000 international student enrolments in South Australia in 2023.
StudyAdelaide Chief Executive Jane Johnston said that while the figures highlight the importance of the international education sector to South Australia’s strong economy, the contribution international students make in the State’s workplaces and community also need recognition.
“International graduates play a vital role in meeting the skilled workforce needs to support the growth of the State’s key industries, she said.
“The top fields of study for international students – management and commerce, engineering, IT, health, and hospitality – closely match the critical skills gaps South Australia needs to fill.
“Beyond that, international students spend money with local businesses, volunteer in the community, and bolster the part-time and casual workforce in a whole range of sectors.
“The success of international education is testament to the South Australian community, which continues to make international students feel welcome both during their study and after they graduate. This in turn, strengthens our state’s connections around the world.”
“International education provides a significant boost to the tourism industry with students and their visiting friends and family underpinning the state’s international tourism spend. The boost to tourism is not only helping local tourism operators but also playing a key role in growing the number of international flights into Adelaide.”
