Victoria: Self-awareness and self-discipline

Victoria didn’t expect the third year of her Bachelor of Business (Hospitality Management) at the International College of Hotel Management (ICHM) to be impacted by a global pandemic. She says starting each day with a good breakfast, making an effort to attend all classes, and making time for exercise and artistic expression has helped her adjust to life during the COVID-19 crisis. What does a typical day of online study at ICHM look like for you?

A typical day for me will always start with a good breakfast. It gives me power for the day. Then, depending on the schedule, I’ll prepare for classes or do a workout to stay active. Then I’ll go for classes. After that, I’ll go for a walk to get some fresh air then do some homework or study.

How are you adjusting to online study?

I’m adjusting through a lot of discipline. I try to attend all classes and lessons. Although it’s a little bit challenging due to all the wi-fi data and devices, ICHM is supporting us and making the process of adjusting easy.

What are the main differences between online study and being in the classroom?

The biggest difference is the face-to-face interaction, but the access to our lecturers is still effectively the same. They were very approachable before this, and they’re very approachable now. So how we can talk to them hasn’t changed, it’s just not face-to-face anymore.

How do you relax when you’re not studying?

Of course, everything isn’t all about studying, and we still need our time to relax. I like to exercise and go for walks and paint and draw mandalas, which I love. It’s very peaceful.

What advice do you want to share with other students as you go through this time together?

I believe this is an opportunity to do something we barely do, which is to be with ourselves. I think the world is giving us the chance to think about all the things we never do. Look at yourself. Look where you are and where your resources are and see where you want to go because we don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow. If you know yourself and have self-awareness, and you know what your capabilities and skills are, it’s going to be easier for you to adjust to the next new ‘normal’.
