Why did you choose to study in Adelaide?

I really wanted to study clinical exercise physiology, but it’s only offered as a Bachelor’s degree in either Adelaide or Brisbane, so I had a choice to make. The University of South Australia has an accredited program and the Head of School, Professor Roger Eston is one of the leading exercise physiology researchers in the world, which meant I would be learning from the best.

I had also visited Adelaide before and liked how I could cycle everywhere. The city is very accessible, and my friends who have previously studied here recommended Adelaide highly. Based on these factors, I knew South Australia was the right choice for me.

What was your first impression of Adelaide?

It’s such a laid-back city. Unlike Melbourne, people aren’t rushing to get somewhere. Also, the airport is so close to the city. It’s very safe, and I feel comfortable walking and cycling everywhere. There are also some really nice surf spots to explore on the weekend.

Tell us about the volunteering you’ve done while studying.

I’ve had the chance to volunteer with many organisations and have purposely sought out opportunities in the sporting arena. I’ve volunteered at family fun days, facilitating physical activities for children and families. I’ve also been the Sports Director for the Malaysian Students’ Council of Australia (MASCA), helping with both sporting and cultural events.

How has studying in Adelaide prepared you for your future career?

I’ve had the opportunity to work with elite athletes and high-tech exercise equipment and have been able to practice my exercise physiology through five different work placements. Working with a range of clinical populations has been enlightening and given me the experience I need to become a diverse, evidence-based practitioner. I’m beyond grateful for the quality of education and opportunities I’ve received from my time studying in Adelaide.

What would you say to students thinking about coming to Adelaide to study?

It’s a small city, so it doesn’t take much effort to make new friends. You’ll make the most of your experience by stepping outside of your comfort zone and embracing the Aussie culture.  Click here to find out more about life in Adelaide.
