Where are you from, and what have you studied and at which institution?
I am from Sonipat, Haryana, India. My educational journey began with a Bachelor of Information Technology in Melbourne.
I furthered my studies by completing a Master of Data Science at the University of Adelaide, which will combine with the University of South Australia to become Adelaide University in 2026.
What has your timeline in Adelaide looked like?
After completing my undergraduate degree in Melbourne, I relocated to Adelaide in 2021 to pursue further education. My journey in Adelaide has been quite enriching.
- July 2021: Commenced my Master of Data Science at the University of Adelaide. Throughout my studies, I maintained a part-time position at OTR to support myself
- 2021-2023: Engaged in various social work initiatives for organisations and schools
- 2023: Honoured with the Adelaide Graduate Award in recognition of my academic achievements and community contributions
- October 2023: Completed my Master's degree
- January 2024: Secured an internship at Think Digital Studios, which subsequently transitioned into a professional role
What motivated you to choose Adelaide over other Australian cities for your studies?
Having experienced life in Melbourne during my undergraduate studies, Adelaide appealed to me as the perfect balance between metropolitan amenities and a more manageable urban environment. Several factors influenced my decision:
Adelaide offers an ideal blend of city conveniences with a more relaxed, growing town atmosphere. Unlike some of Australia's larger metropolitan areas, Adelaide provides all necessary amenities without feeling overcrowded. The laid-back lifestyle was particularly appealing after living in Melbourne.
Additionally, Adelaide's renowned festival culture was a significant draw. The University of Adelaide's status as a prestigious Group of Eight institution, combined with its generous scholarship offer for my desired course and its excellent curriculum in Data Science, ultimately confirmed my decision to relocate.
How did you select your course and institution, and what resources or support services have you found most helpful at your institution?
My course selection was driven by the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in today's world. Data Science, being at the forefront of this technological revolution, aligned perfectly with my academic background in Information Technology.
The most valuable resources during my academic journey were the university's 24/7 library access, which provided an ideal environment for studying, completing assignments, and preparing for examinations. Also, the comprehensive career services, particularly their assistance with CV preparation and professional development guidance.
These resources were instrumental in helping me navigate my studies effectively and prepare for my professional career.
Describe a moment when you felt truly at home in Adelaide.
The moment I truly felt at home in Adelaide was while attending a classic Test cricket match between India and Australia at Adelaide Oval. The atmosphere was extraordinary; it was full of sporting excitement, friendly banter between supporters of both teams, and a genuinely welcoming ambience. This experience epitomised Adelaide's unique character: a place where cultural connections from my homeland could harmoniously intersect with my new Australian life.
If you were to take a friend on a day trip around Adelaide, where would you take them and why?
I would take them to The Bend Motorsport Park in Tailem Bend for a racing event and a hot lap around the circuit. This destination showcases a different side of South Australia beyond the typical tourist attractions. It combines motorsports with the beautiful surrounding landscape of the region's natural beauty.
Where do you currently work, and what are your future aspirations?
I currently work as a Data Scientist at Think Digital Studios in a part-time capacity. This position allows me to apply the skills and knowledge gained during my master's degree in a professional setting.
Looking ahead, my career aspirations centre on developing expertise in AI and Data Science. I envision following an entrepreneurial path in the coming years, with the goal of establishing a startup that addresses unique challenges through innovative data-driven solutions. I am passionate about building something substantial that can make a meaningful impact in the technology sector.
