Where are you from, and what have you studied and at which institution?
I'm from China, and I completed my Bachelor of Engineering (Civil & Structural) at The University of Adelaide, which in 2026 will combine with The University of Adelaide to become Adelaide University.
What motivated you to choose Adelaide over other Australian cities for your studies?
I completed my Victorian Certificate of Education in Geelong and one year of a science degree in Melbourne before making the conscious decision to relocate to Adelaide. I believe Adelaide has the right balance between the friendliness of a regional centre and the vibrancy of a major city. Its relaxed lifestyle allowed me to focus on my engineering degree. Its friendly vibe enabled me to make life-long friendships.
What are some of your favourite things to do in Adelaide?
A group of us head down to Glenelg for a swim, watch the sunset and grab dinner at the Oyster Bar. During the footy season, we watch AFL at the Adelaide Oval or on TV as Port Adelaide supporters.
Having studied in Geelong, Melbourne and Adelaide, I believe Adelaide offers the right balance between the friendliness of a regional centre and the vibrancy of a major city. Adelaide has a strong sense of mateship where people look out for each other. It’s a city to form meaningful, long-term friendships and relationships. That’s why many international graduates, myself included, choose to settle permanently in Adelaide.
Compared to cities on the East Coast, Adelaide offers a relaxed lifestyle. The city is easy to navigate and get around, allowing me to focus on my academic journey and personal development. There is also less competition for jobs compared to other major cities.
