Where are you from, and what did you study and at which institution?
I’m from Nigeria, and I graduated with a Master of Engineering (Biomedical) from Flinders University.
Why did you choose to study in Adelaide?
Back home, I was practising as a young medical doctor, although I always wanted to be an engineer.
I found working as a doctor at home wasn’t fulfilling because there are so many diseases, and I'm just one person trying to do something.
There are very challenging problems that require medical devices, and because those problems don't happen outside of Africa, where medical devices are created, we cannot buy them. A child is dying every minute from Malaria. This meant we are left with whatever we can to improvise.
I've always been a tech enthusiast, and it didn’t look like anybody was going to do anything about it. So, I thought if I don't do it, then I feel strongly that nobody else will try.
What was your journey like studying at Flinders University?
When I came here, I found that the culture was different. I would always ask questions after class, and the lecturers, tutors, and everybody were always happy to help.
In 2022, I was encouraged to apply for the StudyAdelaide International Student Awards. I wasn't hoping I was going to win anything, but I won two of the StudyAdelaide awards, which meant people really cared about the problem I was trying to solve. Winning these awards is a moment I think about very fondly because it changed my entire life.
