Getting around Adelaide is easy. With wide, flat streets, you can walk or cycle around the city. And our extensive public transport system will get you wherever you need to be.

Public transport

Adelaide Metro is Adelaide’s public transport which covers the entire metropolitan region. It includes buses, trains and trams that run from the city to the inner and outer suburbs.

If you’re a full-time student using public transport regularly, you can buy a metroCARD which will allow you to ride on Adelaide’s buses, trains and trams at a discount. 

  • High School students can buy a student metroCARD

  • Full-time post-secondary students with a valid student ID from a South Australian accredited tertiary institution are eligible for a concession metroCARD

  • Part-time students are not eligible for concession travel, and will need to buy a regular metroCARD

Free city tram and bus

Free city tram and bus

The FREE City Connector bus loops around the city and up to North Adelaide. 

You can ride the tram for FREE between the Entertainment Centre and South Terrace and you must validate your ticket beyond these stops.

Walking and cycling

With broad, flat streets and extensive bike paths, cycling and walking around Adelaide is convenient and safe. When you explore Adelaide by bike, you’ll enjoy:

  • Dedicated bike lanes on many city and suburban streets

  • Bike pumps and repair stations located in the city, which you can use for free

  • Plenty of free bicycle parking around the city

  • A network of bike paths weaving through the Adelaide Parklands and to many inner-city suburbs

E-scooters

If you are at least 18 years old, your can ride an e-scooter.

There are two companies that operate e-scooters across Adelaide and North Adelaide. To get started, download the Beam or Neuron app to your mobile device and then create an account, which includes payment details.

Rules apply to the use of e-scooters in South Australia, which you can learn about on MyLicence.

Driving

If you live far from the city, you could get around Adelaide by driving. Whether you buy a car for permanent use or rent a car for the occasional road trip, you’ll need to familiarise yourself with South Australian road rules.

In most cases, you can use your driver’s licence from your home country to drive in South Australia. However, you’ll have to make sure you have it with you whenever you drive, and it must be valid. Learn more about road rules for international drivers.
