Are you proud of your academic excellence, the way you have given back to the community and your peers, or have you worked with others to put together an event or an initiative?  This is your time to shine and get noticed by academic institutions, the local community and businesses – put yourself forward for the 2021 International Student Awards.

This prestigious Award program has been running for 10 years and past finalists and winners have had great things to say - read more here.

Key Dates

  • Applications Open: Thursday 1 July 2021
  • Applications Close: Sunday 29 August 2021, 11:59pm (Adelaide time)
  • Award Presentation: Thursday 14 October 2021, held at the Adelaide Convention Centre and live streamed


What does this mean?

You must submit an online, written application (applications open on the 1st of July and close on the 29th of August 2021).

The Award ceremony is on the 14th October 2021 and finalists should be available in person or online (the event is live streamed), but we understand this is not always possible.

Award Categories

There are:

  • 5 Categories to submit for and
  • 1 Overall Recognition for International Student of the Year (read more about last year’s winner)
    • No submission is necessary.  Judges will choose from entrants across the 5 categories, so make sure you put in your best submission as there is a chance this can be you!

  1. Academic Excellence 
    • Recognises a student's exceptional academic results combined with their contributions outside their academics. It is open to students across different types of studies:
      • University Undergraduate
      • University Postgraduate - Research
      • University Postgraduate - Coursework
      • Vocational Education and Training
      • School
      • Pathways
  2. Community Engagement  
    • Recognises a student's involvement and contribution to the South Australian community including their personal growth and outcomes.  
      • This award is only open to students currently residing in Adelaide.
  3. Special Commendation 
    • Recognises an offshore student’s significant achievements and engagement with fellow students and their South Australian institution.  
      • This award is only open to students currently residing outside of Australia.
  4. Peer Support 
    • Highlights the support and/or advocacy students’ have provided for their fellow international students over the past 12 months.
  5. Student Event/Initiative of the Year 
    • Recognises the work of student associations to deliver events or initiatives to support their peers and enhance their experience in South Australia.

About the Prizes

It is about recognition but our past winners have loved that there are actual prizes!

  1. Each award recipient will receive an award certificate recognising their achievement.
  2. The winner in each individual award category will receive $500 cash prize.
  3. Highly Commended award recipients will receive $200 cash prize.
  4. Student association event/initiative of the year receives a $500 cash prize to be spent on a future student event/initiative.
  5. The winner of the Special Commendation will receive $1,000 cash prize.
  6. The recipient of the International Student of the Year will receive $2,500 cash prize.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will I hear the outcome of my application?

Successful applicants will be notified by Friday 1 October 2021 and invited to attend the award ceremony on 14 October 2021.  Unsuccessful applicants will also be notified by Friday 1 October 2021.

What documents should I attach to my application?

Any documents that will support what you have written in your application and verify the information you have provided.  Eg: any academic awards or recognition from the university, examples of work that you have excelled in, letter(s) of reference.  You are required to submit your academic record (not official transcript) during the application process for certain categories.

What is GPA?

GPA refers to Grade Point Average.  This is an academic measure used by universities. If you are studying at another education institution, please include the grade or score that you have received.

Who should be my referee?

Referees are people who are relevant to the content in your application and able to verify some of the information in it. For the non-academic award categories, you need to include one academic referee as well as a second referee who can verify the activities mentioned in your application.  Referees can not be yourself, friends or family members.

What do my referees have to do?

Your referees should be aware that they may be contacted by StudyAdelaide or the judging panel to verify the content of your application.  If you wish, you can ask them to provide you with a reference letter to attach to your application.  Please note that a reference letter is not required.

Can I apply in more than one category?

Yes, you can but you will need to complete a separate application for each category.

I am currently studying outside of Australia, am I eligible to apply this year?

Yes, we welcome applications for students studying outside of Australia. In fact, we have a category specifically for students studying offshore – the Special Commendation. In addition, you are eligible to apply for all categories except Community Engagement.

  1. Nominees must be;
    1. current international students, enrolled in a South Australian education institution that is a member of StudyAdelaide.
    2. currently studying or have completed a course within the last six months.
  2. Nominations for individual awards must be written by the student applying for the award. 
  3. Nominations for Student Event/Initiative of the Year must be submitted by the student association leadership team
  4. Previous winners may apply but must submit a new application.
  5. Applicants can apply in more than one category but must submit a separate application for each category.
  6. All nomination information, photos and supporting material submitted may be used and distributed by StudyAdelaide for media and promotional purposes. 
  7. Nominees agree to participate in media publicity and promotion associated with the awards, including the use of photos submitted, or taken at the awards presentation ceremony.
  8. Finalists should be available and endeavour to attend or connect online for the award ceremony on Thursday 14 October 2021 (inability to attend does not disqualify entry).

  1. All criteria should be addressed in your online nomination.  Relevant supporting documents and photographs should be attached to your nomination.  You can attach these as the last step of your online application.
  2. Applications open on Thursday 1 July 2021 and close 11:59pm Australian Central Standard Time (ACST) on Sunday 29 August 2021.
  3. You can withdraw your application at any time up to 11:59pm Australian Central Standard Time (ACST) on Sunday 29 August 2021 by emailing [email protected].
  4. The award winners will be announced on Thursday 14 October 2021.


Selection Process

  1. The selection of winners is undertaken by a specialist judging panel convened by StudyAdelaide.
  2. The judges reserve the right to verify the content provided in any of the applications received.
  3. Members of the judging panel will maintain the confidentiality of the content of each application, unless consent is given by the nominee to do otherwise.
  4. StudyAdelaide reserves the right to not award the full complement of awards in any one year, if it is determined that the criteria have not been fully met.
  5. The judges’ decisions are final and no further correspondence will be entered.
