After university exams the most awaited time has come now. Many students stay at home complaining about the weather because it is so cold outside. Here is my guide to enjoying the winter break in Adelaide.
10. Go on free tours around the city.
Students living in the city walk past the State Library, Museum and the Art Gallery on daily basis but most have not actually walked into one of them to discover what they contain. There are many tours organized daily in these places. If you go on the tours you can roam around the places exploring what they actually present to the visitors. The Botanical Garden has a daily tour as well. If you are a nature lover this is what you are looking for. If you are a chocolate lover you should definitely go on the Haigh’s Chocolate factory tour. Believe it or not, all of these tours are absolutely free and almost all of them are available daily.
9. Cook
The main reason why any student is homesick is because of food. Everyone misses their familiar foods because there is a huge difference between Australia and other countries when it comes to the food, especially when you are a student from Asia. So my suggestion is to stop complaining, ring your mum and ask how to cook your favourite dish when you are back at home. So then you can go shopping for the ingredients and cook your favourite meal. If it is a success the first time, invite your friends and offer them what you cook the second time. It is a good way to socialize with others and taste some of your own food so you will not be homesick anymore just because you are missing your favourite foods.
8. Read books
If you are too lazy to go outside still then read a book at home. If you take the free membership of the Adelaide City Council Library you can borrow any kind of book you like for a period of one month. This is a good way to ease the stress of exams you have just finished. Even ask your friends whether they have any books you can borrow. Believe it or not you will find more friends who like the same kind of books as you do.
7. Borrow movies
Just like borrowing books you can borrow movies if you have the free membership of the Adelaide City Council library. You can borrow your favourite movie and watch alone or invite some friends over to your home to watch the movie together. This is a good way to catch up with movies you have recently missed due to exams and also to watch your all-time favourite movies such as Sound of Music, Ben Hur and the Ten Commandments, not to mention the old cartoon movies such as Jungle Book, Robin Hood and Aristocats.
6. Catch up with your hobbies
During the exam period many students forgets their hobbies completely because they have to concentrate on their studies. So after the exams you can re-start your hobby. If your hobby is playing a musical instrument, start playing your favourite tune again. If your hobby is painting, start painting your next masterpiece again. No matter what your hobby is, spent more time on it now as before long the university assignments will be sky high again.
5. Go for a swim
I know it is so cold but, believe it or not, North Adelaide Aquatic centre has temperature controlled indoor swimming pools. If you need to be active in the winter time, I think this is the place you should go. You can go to the Aquatic Centre for a concession rate of just 6 dollars and spent as much time as you want inside. The facility also includes sauna, steam rooms & spas. So for one visit it is guaranteed that you can spend at least 2 to 3 hours enjoying all the facilities in quick succession. This is a real good way to stay fit in the winter. If you go there once, I am sure you will at least go two or three times a week.
4. Go for a walk
It is really hard to go on for a walk during winter because it is raining but if you are checking weather regularly you will find a perfect time to go for a walk in perfect weather. So you can put on your favourite hoodie, your favourite tracks and your favourite walking shoes and go outside and get some fresh air. Adelaide has a lot of parks around the city and around the city centre as well. If you walk into one of those parks you will leave the busy streets behind. You will spend a long time for sure without even realising it.
3. Go for a movie
As this is the holiday season you can always go for movies on the cheaper days with your friends. Palace Nova Eastend Cinema has cheaper tickets on Mondays while Hoyts and Wallis Cinemas have cheaper tickets on Tuesdays. So you can go out with your friends and watch the latest movies. During his time of the year, a lot of great movies come out.
2. Go out to eat with friends
You can go out with your friends and eat a lot these days. Now you have time to go and try new restaurants other than going to your usual places. Adelaide is a city with a lot of cultures so you can try a lot of different cuisines. But always check out the menu before you place the order, so that you will always get a cheaper place with good food.
1. Drink as much as coffee you can
Australia is known as the nation of coffee drinkers. So you should definitely drink coffee. It will help you to keep your body warm when it is cold outside. You can try different coffees from different coffee shops as Adelaide is full of coffee shops. Soon you will find your favourite place and be a regular visitor there so that you can even get a free coffee for every 10th purchase. You can even try making your own coffee at your home. Also, you can drink tea. If you are a chocoholic, I recommend a cup of homemade hot chocolate with a couple of marshmallows.
I hope this will help out all the students living in Adelaide. Don’t complain about the weather. No matter what the weather is, there is always a way to enjoy yourself in Adelaide, if you choose to try out new things within your home or outside.
